STEEL INDUSTRY ANNOUNCES ROGER A. LABOUBE, PH.D. AS A
RECIPIENT OF THE 2010 MARKET DEVELOPMENT INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP AWARD
Boca Raton,
FL – AISI’s
Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI) announced today that Roger A.
LaBoube, Ph.D., distinguished teaching professor, Department of Civil
Engineering and director of the Wei-Wen Yu Center for Cold-Formed Steel
Structures at the Missouri University of Science and Technology, is a
recipient of the 2010 Market Development Industry Leadership Award. The
award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions in
advancing the competitive use of steel in the marketplace as a direct
result of AISI Steel Market Development Institute initiatives in the
automotive, construction and container markets, as well as steel
recycling. Dr. LaBoube was presented with the award by AISI Chairman Dan
DiMicco, chairman, president and CEO of Nucor Corporation, during a
ceremony held at AISI’s 118th General Meeting.
The award inscription reads: “Presented to ROGER A. LABOUBE,
PH.D. in recognition of your significant contribution in advancing
applications of steel in Construction market development.”
AISI Steel Market Development Institute President Lawrence W.
Kavanagh said: “Roger LaBoube has contributed significantly to the
body of research supporting cold-formed steel design, with innovations
that have advanced the use of steel in the marketplace for applications
such as metal building systems, roofing and siding, deck applications,
rack storage structures, and light-frame construction. We appreciate the
leadership that he has shown over the years with AISI’s Committee
on Specifications and Committee on Framing Standards to promote the use
of cold-formed steel design in the marketplace.”
“Roger has contributed significantly to the body of research
that undergirds AISI S100, the North American Specification for the Design of
Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members, which is used throughout the
world as a reference for building design,” said Robert Wills, vice president of construction
market development for AISI’s Steel Market Development Institute.
“He has provided critical leadership for AISI’s Committee on
Specifications and Committee on Framing Standards, stepping in as a
committee chairman, task group leader, researcher, author and editor of
design standards, technical notes and articles, and ultimately as a
seminar presenter to facilitate effective technology
transfer.”
Jay Larson, managing director, construction technical with the
American Iron and Steel Institute, said: “Roger represents a rare
breed in our industry, combining both industrial and academic experience
in building design, teaching and research. His experience, drive,
intellect and character have made his name almost synonymous with
cold-formed steel construction, especially in the United
States. The depth of his knowledge and
his eagerness to help others has made him a comprehensive information
resource for fabricators, designers, researchers, users, and steel
customers. As director of the Wei-Wen Yu Center for Cold-Formed Steel
Structures at the Missouri University of Science and Technology, he
provides technology transfer through technical service, engineering
education, research and professional activity. His contributions to
promoting cold-formed steel design are considerable.”
Roger A. Laboube, Ph.D., is a distinguished teaching professor,
Department of Civil Engineering and director of the Wei-Wen Yu Center

The Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI) is a business unit of
AISI that grows and maintains the use of steel through strategies that
promote cost-effective solutions in the automotive, construction, and
container markets, as well as for new-growth opportunities in
non-traditional steel markets, value-added long products, and steel
recycling. SMDI is comprised of eight member companies, including
integrated and electric furnace steelmakers: AK Steel Corporation,
ArcelorMittal Dofasco, ArcelorMittal USA, Nucor Corporation, Severstal
North America Inc., SSAB Americas, United States Steel Corporation, and
USS-POSCO Industries.
AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the
public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace
as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the
development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology.
AISI is comprised of 25 member companies, including integrated and
electric furnace steelmakers, and 138 associate and affiliate members
who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry. AISI's member
companies represent approximately 75 percent of both U.S. and North American steel
capacity. For more news about steel and its applications, visit
