Steel Possibilities for Tomorrow

Control
  • Tomorrow's steel cans will continue to preserve the nutrition and taste of thousands of food products for consumers that demand flavor, shelf stability and convenience.

  • Even greater use of the steel recycling logo and recycling messages on canned food and other tin mill products will help consumers to remember steel's environmental benefits.

  • New can shapes are under development for greater utilization of shelf space. Decorative additions to can shapes will lend appeal to their good looks on retail shelves.

  • Steel research and development experts are continuously developing thinner and stronger steels, lighter-weight, economical packaging and other uses.
Endless applications exist for packaging steels, because what can be imagined, can be produced in steel. Today, intense product development work is underway for advanced canning technologies. Advancements in lighter-weight cans, steel easy-open ends, and new styles of cans are helping to make them even more convenient for consumers.

New Coatings for Versatility

Film laminates and new coatings are improving and broadening applications for packaging steels.

New coatings and enhancements to existing coatings will continue to add to the steel can's protection of its contents while further extending shelf life.

Answering Demands for Consumer Convenience

To further answer consumer convenience demands, thinner, lighter steels with polymer coatings are being tested for microwaveable trays and contains. Consumers can expect to see widespread applications of steel easy-open can ends, along with more products, in a greater variety of sizes and shapes, including single-serve containers.

Recycling Today and Tomorrow

The Steel Recycling Institute and other groups, such as the Steel Recycling Partnership and Canned Food Information Council, are helping government, manufacturers and consumers to gain a better understanding of the convenience, nutrition, and recycling benefits of steel cans. The versatility and recyclability of packaging steels are also becoming more visible to consumers through greater awareness efforts about steel recycling.

The proven performance and value of packaging steels, along with complete recyclability, continue to offer product and packaging designers the exciting potential to form new can shapes and sizes, coatings and decoration capabilities that maximize consumer convenience and appeal.
