November Imports Decline vs. October
12/23/2008- Washington, D.C. – Based on preliminary Census Bureau data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that the U.S. imported a total of 2,241,000 net tons (NT) of steel in November 2008, including 2,058 ,000 NT of finished steel (down 28 percent and 17 percent, respectively, vs. October final data).
AISI and AIST Scholarship Application Announcement
12/04/2008- Washington, D.C. – The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and the Association for Iron & Steel Technology Foundation (AIST Foundation) have announced that applications for the FeMET and StEEL Scholarships are being accepted now through March 5, 2009.
Steel Import Permit Applications Decline vs. Prior Month
12/03/2008- Washington, D.C. - Based on the Commerce Department’s most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that steel import permit applications for the month of November totaled 2,277,000 net tons (NT).
October Imports Up 1 Percent vs. September
11/25/2008- Washington, D.C. – Based on preliminary Census Bureau data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that the U.S. imported a total of 2,964 ,000 net tons (NT) of steel in October 2008, including 2,344,000 NT of finished steel (up 1 percent and down 5 percent, respectively, vs. September final data).
September Steel Shipments Down 6.8 Percent From Last Year
11/21/2008- WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that for the month of September 2008, U.S. steel mills shipped 7,920,000 net tons, a 6.8 percent decrease from the 8,492,000 net tons shipped in September 2007 and a 10.7 percent decrease from the 8,860,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, August 2008.

11/19/2008- The following joint statement was released today by the United Steelworkers, American Iron and Steel Institute, Steel Manufacturer’s Association, Specialty Steel Industry of North America and The Committee on Pipe and Tube Imports.
Voters Express Opposition to Foreign Steel in the U.S. Not Meeting U.S. Standards
11/13/2008- WASHINGTON, D.C. – A national survey of over 1,000 U.S. voters found that 80 percent of those polled believe that cheap steel from countries where environmental standards and manufacturing requirements are low is a bad thing (see chart below).
